ACOs and Other Laws

Rescues and shelters often interface with the local Animal Control Officers (ACO) and Municipal Animal Inspectors. The same person may hold both roles in your town.

• Strays - In MA, stray dogs are required to be held for seven days before being eligible for adoption. There is no required stray hold for cats.  

• Dog bites - If a dog bites a foster or volunteer, report it to the local Municipal Animal Inspector. Usually a ten day quarantine is required. Getting pictures of the dog bite and written statements on what happened is recommended.
